Welcome to the World of Multimedia!

Multimedia, just as the word implies, is the integration of multi- (many different and media( form of communication). This includes audio sound, graphic images, text, animation and full motion video.

Multimedia means that information can be presented through many different outlets. It is the field wherein computers control the integration of media, and it is processed and transmitted digitally.

Multimedia can be recorded and played by processing devices such as your average computer or tablet…even your smartphone. Multimedia devices are devices that are used to store and experience content.

Let’s investigate each component:

Audio Sound…What would life be like without sound? Can you imagine not being able to hear that favorite song? Audio files and streams play a major role in some multimedia systems. Audio is extremely important because it can reinforce the user’s understanding of information presented in another media format. This can lead to better comprehension of content. Lynda videos are a good example of how audio is combined with video to enhance comprehension.

Graphics…Still or static pictures can be seen in many multimedia applications. Digital images can be used in many formats. Most are JPEG and PNG extensions. Digital images and be easily manipulated with software programs such as Photoshop.

Text…Probably the most common form of media, text is often integrated with digital images to add meaning and detail.

Animation…Animations can include interactive effects where the user can use the computer mouse and keyboard to engage with animation action.  One common animation tool is Adobe Flash.

Video…Digital video can be found in many multimedia applications. Familiar video formats include AVI, WMV, MPEG, and QuickTime. Most digital video requires the use of browser plug-ins to play within Web pages.

So as you can see multimedia is all around us. It is so ingrained in all facets of our life we rarely think of its exceptional effect on our daily existence.
